Chapter 19
Beck had tossed and turned all night, torn between hurt and confusion and anger. The way heâd...and the way sheâd...and the way theyâd...Sheâd shoved her pillow over her face and screamed in frustration until she eventually fell into a fitful sleep. Nightmares plagued her, but this time it wasnât the long corridor and the shadow man. Scenes of Poseidon and Calypso together played in her dreams, over and over. Them kissing, tangled up together. Him giving Beck a cruel smile, whispering, âOh come on, Beck. You canât really have believed Iâd pick you?â
Now, she waited in the study for Poseidon to show up, growing more and more agitated by the minute. He was over three hours late. What the hell was he doing? Actually, nope, I donât want to know. That heat flared in her chest again. Her power? Twice in as many days? That was unheard of, but here it was, burning away. She wished she really knew how to use it, to practice or hone it into an actual useful skill like her motherâs had been once up on a time.
She tapped a pen on the table, the speed increasing in direct proportion to her irritation. Sheâd already gone through all of the latest correspondence, sent responses to several invitations, and outlined a plan to help in construction of a new school within the Pathsirosâ realm. She bounced her foot in time with her taps, counting the seconds in her head. She was giving him thirty more, that was it. No more. If he wanted to spend the entire day sowing his oats with his former lover then that was fine, but she wouldnât just sit here like a fool while he did it. She had other things she could be doing. Important things. Things like...aw crap. Guilt speared her. Things like trying to find a way to contact her mother. Yes, she really should do that. Emmie had said she was safe, but that didnât mean Beck shouldnât try to check for herself. She was beyond pissed at her mom, but she still didnât want her hurt or worse by the demons still very much after Beck.
One hundred and forty-two seconds later, she threw the pen across the room.
âFuck this.â
She stormed out of the study and stomped down the hallway. She was halfway to the stairs when she heard him call her name. Her spine stiffened.
âBeck, wait,â he called again.
She debated continuing on like a child having a tantrum, but she reminded herself that she was going to keep things civil. Heâd technically done nothing wrong, after all. They were friends and nothing more, despite what sheâd thought might have been shifting last night before the bitch showed up. She ground her teeth. Civil. Friends. I can do this.
Beck stopped and turned, trying her best not to glare at him. He jogged towards her, looking exhausted. Do not think about why, do not think about why...
âIâm sorry,â he said in a rush, as if he couldnât get the words out quickly enough.
